Today while reading a news article about free market economics, some thoughts came to mind.
It was remarkable to note striking similarities between governing and parenting.
Typical functions of a government / Parent
1. Protect their people / children.
2. Take care of them when they face a disaster / sickness.
3. Educate, motivate and inspire to inculcate good citizenship / human values.
4. Inform them of important events.
5. Act with fairness when there are disputes.
6. Provide welfare services / pocket money.
Questions a good government or a parent may ask themselves?
What should governments / parents do?
1. Enforce rules or provide freedom?
2. To what extent should they set rules?
3. To what extent should they provide freedom?
4. Should they appease their people / children to gain popularity?
5. Should they take unpopular actions for the long term good of people / children?
I don't believe answers to this questions are clear. Like most things in life, you may say it depends! :)
Your thoughts are welcome.
